This is one of my all time favourite bread recipes! It is super simple, and yet so delicious and impressive to pull out at a party.
1/4 cup lukewarm almond milk
3/4 cup warm water
1 tsp honey
2 1/2 tsp active dry yeast
2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp dried basil
2 Tbsp canola oil
pinch chili flakes
1/8 tsp dried oregano
1/8 tsp dried thyme
1/4 tsp basil
1 garlic clove, minced
1-2 Tbsp powdered parmesan
Mix together milk, water, honey and yeast. Let sit for 15 minutes. Meanwhile mix together flour, salt, garlic and dried basil. With a fork gradually mix in water yeast mixture until forms a ball. Once you have a nice ball of dough, put onto clean counter top. Knead by hand for 2 minutes. Place on flour surface of counter and cover with a warm damp towel. Let rise for 1 hour.
While dough is rising mix together oil, garlic and all the spices.
Once dough has risen. Roll out on a floured counter until it reaches about 12" x 20". Brush with oil herb mix and sprinkle with parmesan cheese. With pizza cutter slice dough lengthwise in half and stack on top of each other. Now slice crosswise in half, and stack on top of each other (you now have 4 pieces stacked on top). Repeat this step once more. Place stacks evenly spread out in a parchment lined loaf pan. If you have any leftover oil mix pour over top. Cover with a warm damp towel and let rise 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350˚F.
Once dough has risen, place in oven and bake for 35 minutes. Let cool for 5 minutes in pan before removing. Cool slightly before serving! Enjoy
No need to be too particular with the rolling and cutting stages, even if the pieces are not all perfect sizes your bread will turn out!
Substitutions: This recipe also works great with all purpose flour.
Regular milk works as well as almond milk.
Also feel free to use other dried herbs, that is just my favourite combination!
